and the town generally were after me. The Chamber of Commerce desired to give a reception and I was invited to dinners and other functions, all of which I de- clined. On February second we went to Galveston by motor to see my old friend, Chief Justice Gaines, who is now in ill health. When I returned to Houston I had more demands upon my time and I was glad to take the train that night for Austin. The only incident here to be mentioned in the diary are the visits of Secretary McAdoo and Houston. They reached Austin on the morning of the 9th and were our guests and the guests of the town until the morning of the 10th. At my request they held the Regional Bank hearing here instead of in Houston. On the night of the night we had them to dinner with Governor and Mrs. Colquitt, Governor and Mrs. Sayers, Judge and Mrs. Maxey and some others. After dinner Governor Colquitt took us to the theater to see "Every Woman". Secretary Hous- ton was the guest of President Mezes for dinner, but his party joined ours at the theater later. Mezes and I went as far as Houston with the Secretaries. From Hempstead we were taken down by a special in order to arrive in Houston in time to see some- thing of the place. The track was level and good and we <sic>travelled<sic> at a speed of eighty miles an hour. The day was beautiful and we were met <del/> at the station by some of the prominent citizens of the town and driven over the city in motors. McAdoo and Houston left for New Orleans that evening and Mezes and I returned to Austin. It is not my purpose to keep the diary while I am in Texas for the rea- son that nothing of national interest is happening, although I am seeing people from every part of the State and am exceedingly busy. I have undertaken to go through my accumulated correspondence of thirty years. I found this an impossible task alone, and my secretary has segregated
