I declined but asked for seats in a box to hear the President speak, in the event he comes. I had a telegram from the President saying: "I fell that it would not be wise or right for me to be absent from Washington tomorrow. So sorry not to see you." I am sorry, for I had a dinner and theater party planned for him. He was to spend the afternoon and evening with me. We lunched with Charles Grasty. Among his guests were Col. and Mrs. Nelson, and Mr. and Mrs. Untermyer. Mrs. <del/> Nelson said they were now Wilson people. This is what I have worked for assiduously. April 22, 1914. Nothing of much importance happened today. <del/> It was one of ordinary rou- tine. Of course we are all distressed over the beginning of war with Mexico. Actual hostilities were caused by the precipitate demand of Admiral Mayo and <add>the event</add> bears out the value of my advice to the President not to permit either army or navy of- ficers to speak for the Government when they are within easy reach by wireless or cable. It will be difficult to restrict the sphere of war to Vera Cruz. The war feeling will grow on both sides of the Rio Grande, and there is no telling where it will end.
