<margin> <note>Copy of Letter which <gap reason=illegible> until to Lewis</note> </margin> May 1st, 1914. Mr. Alfred Henry Lewis, New York American Office, Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. Lewis: During the past weeks I have carefully read your critical articles on the President, his adminis- tration, his friends and his attitude towards certain pol- ices and measures. I have been particularly distressed at the statements you have made in many of these articles about a very dear friend of mine, Colonel Edward M. House. You have inti- mated that Colonel House is a man of great wealth and lives in a beautiful home in New York. Of course, such must have been your information. But, as a matter of fact, Colonel House is a man of very moderate circumstances who lives in a five-room apartment which he rents from a land- lord, as most of us do who live in apartments in the City of New York. You have intimated, if not said, that he was interested in Mexico and Mexican securities. Colonel House is not, and never has been interested in Mexico or Mexican affairs and has never in his life visited Mexico. Moreover, he holds no Mexican securities of any kind, directly or in- directly, and has never held any such securities. You have also stated that, if not intimate with, he is at least on terms of understanding with gentlemen of large business affairs and high finance, such as J. Pierpont Morgan, James J. Hill, Thomas F. Ryan and others.
