feel sure that if you knew exactly what I was laboring against, no explanations would be necessary. A few days after your departure for Europe, alarming <sic>systoms</sic> developed with Mrs. Wilson. I called several physicians in consultation for help but there was none, except temporary. I felt it my duty to save the President from all worry, anxiety and distress as long as possible. This was an awful load to struggle under. He gradually realized the seriousness of the case and about a week before the end, I told him I thought the daughters should be here-- he understood. You cannot imagine how I felt through it all. Hoping almost against hope that she would rally and improve. Complication after complication developed, add- ing to the gravity of the kidney <sic>desease</sic>. I longed for you many, many times. I went to our dear and true friend, McAdoo, and told him all. I often thought of writing all my troubles to you, but on reflection, I decided to spare you also. You were abroad, unable to help the President, and I thought of how dreadful the news would be to you. I worked with all my power for her and was hoping she would hold on until Fall at least, and I could tell you all upon your return. When I meet you I will give you all the de- tails. If it were not that I feel I should stick <del/> by the President every day now, I would run up to spend a day with you. So much I would like to tell you in a minor way. I went to New Jersey with T last Saturday, and spent Sunday there with him. He is behaving much better, but our diagnosis is absolutely correct. I am nursing him and want peace at any cost, within the bounds of self respect, for the President's sake. The President is holding up wonderfully well, all things considered, but I am having a hard time to get him away. He thinks his salvation lies in hard work. He needs a rest and a change of scene badly-- a mental change. He is averse to going away, but I think that I am going to persuade him to go away.
