He told me that Grayson said he did not believe the President would be able to go through another arduous term. He has a <sic>tendancy</sic> toward hardening of the arte- ries and continual consentration of the mind is bad for that trouble. McAdoo did not think the President would run, or wanted to run for a second term. I replied that I believed he would run though I did not tell him that I see every indication of this fact. People in office often delude themselves, and I be- lieve the President is in this state now. I am certain he would be a disappoint- ed man if anything should arise to make a second term impossible. McAdoo would not think of remaining in the Treasury for six years longer, and if he knew definitely that a second term was on the cards, he would take the Metropolitan Life offer. If, on the other hand, the President should not run a second time, he might consider remaining in the Cabinet and continuing in public life, if that were possible. Last night, Fire Commissioner Adamson and the Mayor's secretary came to see me in great excitement. Murphy was insisting that Governor Glynn should speak in Tammany Hall. They thought if this were done it would place the Mayer in a ridiculous attitude, and they thought the independent democrats of New York State would resent such action by refusing to vote for the Governor at the coming election. They desired me to tell Glynn that he should not do this. I said I could not reach the Governor, but they were at liberty to get this word to him in any way that was feasible. They telephoned me this morning that at twelve o'clock last night they had brought about the desired result. Ex-Corporation Counsel Watson telephoned to tell me of his conversation with Governor Glynn yesterday, and of Glynn's request that he come and advise with me. The purport of it was that Glynn did not think McAdoo was giving him sufficient support.
