I took the midnight train for New York. Mr. Lamb of the Neutrality Squad had been instructed to remain in Washington until my return and accompany me back. New York, March 8, 1916. In the diary of yesterday and the day before I have not gone into de- tails of telegrams, letters and importunities of people desiring to see me. Today I have been busy with mail and have refused to see almost all callers. I shall try to seclude myself for several days in this way. I sent a <sic>despatch</sic> in our private code to Sir Edward Grey, and received a cable from Sir Horace Plunkett concerning the controversy between Balfour and Churchill. It is my purpose to curtail the diary more and more, putting in only what seems of value. I feel, though, I may not use the best judgment in this, and that Lord Bryce may be right in thinking that we often exaggerate the unimpor- tant while the historian wonders why nothing was said of matters which seem at a later date of vital interest. March 9, 1916. I received a delightful letter from the President today in which he again speaks of his gratification of what I did while in Europe. Newspaper men have pestered me today about one matter or another. Cleve- land Dodge says there is a rumor in Wall Street that the main purpose of my trip to Europe was to gain the consent of the governments over there for the <del/> United States to purchase Northern Mexico. I authorized him to make a denial. He said he was ready to give more money for Page in London. He has given to date $25,000.
