I have about come to the conclusion that Vance McCormick of Pennsylvania is worth looking over for National Chair- man. I shall arrange to have him over this week so as to see what he is like. Polk thinks it would be cruel to Lansing to have him <add>(Polk)</add> leave the State Depart- ment at this time and I agreed with him. Lansing is not well, and his serious disability at this time would, in my opinion, be a blow to the administration. I showed Polk my letters and suggestions to the President, my cable to Sir Edward Grey, and the suggestion I made to the President concerning the speech to be made on May 27th. He approved it all. He thought it a pity we did not have someone as Ambassador in London who could help in the general plan we have in mind. He knows, as I do, how hard it is to bring about ac- complishment when we are all working together and striving for the same end. When Quinn was here he told us of some reference <add>he had dug up</add> <del/> made by Alexander Hamilton concerning foreign affairs and the selfishness of nations and I added my own opinion upon this subject. <add>No class of people</add> <del>The pirates of finance</del> are <del>not</del> more ruthless, as a rule, in their dealings with one another than are governments. The governments, however, clothe their actions in subtle and diplomatic terms and use high-sounding, patriotic and altruistic sentiments.
