I agreed to help him with the others. I was struck by the fact that he showed no evidence of anything excepting good feeling toward me. I expect- ed him to ask my plans for the summer, but there was no mention of <add>them</add> <del/> except by me. Sometimes I wonder if we are not misjudging his father, because most of what we hear that is disagreeable comes as gossip. May 18, 1916. Several letters came from the President today. One about Page pleases me much. He takes the stand I anticipated. When Lansing asked him to bring Page home for consultation he gave no answer and both Lansing and Polk thought he was not sympathetic with the idea. The State Department was delighted when it was learned there might be possible friction between Page and me because they thought, they lost confidence. As a matter of fact, the President indicated nothing, and I have no doubt wishes to discuss the matter with me before giving his decision. The President's other letters are among the most important he has ever written me and are particularly noted. The last one in regard to the cable I suggested to be sent Sir Edward Grey, is especially pleasing. He does not make a single change. The President is leaving this momentous decision to me-- a decision, in- deed, that marks the turning point in our international relations and in our old-time non-interference policy. I feel sure if he will follow our present plans all the way through, history will give him one of the highest places among the statesmen of the world. It does not matter whether he mediates or not, but what does matter is for him to strike the high note, the right note, and hold to it regardless of consequences to himself. He can and will become
