the President. We talked for an hour and a half and covered the ground pretty th<add>o</add>roughly. I had him outline the exact message he purposed sending his Govern- ment. I made several suggestions and eliminations, all of which he accepted. The message tells the British Government that if they think it advisable and will defer an answer to Germany until Friday or Saturday of this week, I will undertake to find out unofficially the terms Germany has in mind. We hope to receive a reply, provided they acquiesce, by tomorrow afternoon. I shall imme- diately send for Bernstorff and set things in motion. December 18, 1916. The British Embassy received a reply from their Government stating it would be impossible to postpone a statement by the Prime Minister regarding peace terms. They asked that their thanks be given me for my proffered ser- vice. My letter to the President yesterday and today are attached. Among my callers was Mrs. Abby Scott Baker, who is a leader of the Woman's Suffrage Party. I had to laugh at her because of her failure in the West. When she left me at Sunapee in June she said she was going West to re- main until the President was defeated. They now wish to enlist the President in the movement for a constitutional amendment. Dudley Field Malone came to say he was thinking of resigning as Collector of the Port. He believes he has gotten all of value there is in the office and should go into private life. I advised him to do so. December 19, 1916. Sir William Wiseman called this morning. We had a long talk about feeling in England against the United States and how best to meet it. My letter to the President today tells something of my views. Cleveland H. Dodge and Henry Morganthau came to talk over several matters,
