Hamilton Holt and Mr. Short of the League to Enforce Peace came shortly after lunch. They made a report on what they were doing and advised with me as to what should be done further. I told Holt the League to Enforce Peace was making a mistake in so closely defining the purposes of the League. I advised making the purposes more general for no one at this time could tell what would <add>be the</add> result of international negotiations on that subject, and it was not well to tie ourselves down to a special program. He understood and said he would try to change the attitude. He wished to proceed in still another direction which I thought inadvisable and which he agreed to drop. Mr. Howard Whitehouse, M. P. came to confer further regarding the pro- gress of the President's peace program. January 14, 1917. Dr. Hollis Godfrey telephoned from Philadelphia asking if he might come over for a half hour's conference. He came with his secretary and confined himself to the thirty minutes allotted.
