have a key to what the Germans are trying to do. We discussed Egan's <sic>despatch</sic> and decided that it would not be wise to make any statement regarding the Zimmermann note, for the reason that anything said would give them some clue as to what we had and how we got it. We went into our Mexican relations; our relations with Japan and the se- lection of a successor to Ambassador Guthrie. He asked me to write the Pres- ident my views and I promised to do so. He has no idea what the President has in mind to say in his address to Congress when it convenes. He saw the Pres- ident yesterday and tried in several ways to get some line upon his thoughts, but failed. He wishes me to write the President and tell him what I think should be done, believing my advice will be along the lines of his, Lansing's, views. He is as anxious as I am that the President should take the reins in his own hands and not allow Congress to run away with the situation. Lansing always makes a careful memorandum of his conversations with the President and of all Cabinet meetings. Gordon Abbott called to ask whether the Government had formulated any plan of financing in the event of war. I thought not, but advised him to write me a letter asking the question and giving his views. I promised to take it up and to have the entire subject thought through, which is the only way such a matter can properly be done, otherwise we will be in as much chaos as England and France have been. Vance McCormick and Governor Campbell of Texas were other callers. Our guest<add>s</add> at the dinner we gave the Lansings at the Colony Club were: Dr. Henri Bergson, Lady Lister-Kaye, Cornelius and Mrs. Vanderbilt, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery Hare, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Straight, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Alexander, Mr. and Mrs. Lucias Wilmerding, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick H. Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Soley, Judge Ge<add><gap reason=illegible></add>ard, Dr. and Mrs. Mezes and Gordon and Janet.
