April 12, 1917. James M. Beck, Sidney Brooks and Edward S. Martin lunched with me. They are all clever and it was an enjoyable affair. Governor Herrick was my most important caller in the afternoon. He came apropos of nothing as far as I could see. A committee from the League to Enforce Peace called to ask whether I would advise their giving a dinner to Balfour, Joffre and Viviani and other notable guests coming from France and England. I advised doing nothing for the moment; that as soon as I knew their itinerary I would let them know what was best to do. Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt telephoned to offer her home for any purpose I thought might be pleasant in entertaining the Balfour party. She offered to give a dinner, allowing me to name the guests. I told her also that I would later let her know. We dined with Mrs. James Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt's mother. Some of the other guests were, Mrs. E. H. Harriman, Mr. and Mrs. Cass Ledyard and some sixteen or eighteen others. April 13, 1917. Among the callers today were Gordon Abbott of the Old Colony Trust Co. and Herman Ridder of the Staats Zeitung. Abbott came about war financing and Ridder about German-Americans influencing their brethren in Germany in the di- rection of democracy. We agreed upon a plan which I think will be effective if it can be carried out. The President's cypher telegram about Brazil and my reply are attached. I am exceedingly anxious that this South American pact should go through, for it was my conception and, for a long while, my pet child.
