The Wallaces, Gordon and Janet came to dinner. My other callers were unim- portant. May 22, 1917. Snowdron Marshall called first. He wished to discuss the coming vacancy in the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Vance McCormick followed to tell of his recent visit to Washington. Franklin Roosevelt and Captain Barry have been telling him the kind of things they told me of the Navy Department. They are violent in criticism of Daniels. In pinning them down to concrete examples, McCormick was as unsuccessful as I have been. I have never been an advocate of Daniels, as this diary will show, but I dislike to hear his subordinates talk of him as they do and without substantial evidence. He seems to procrastinate, which is, perhaps, his worst offence. Henri Bernstein called to tell of his decision to go to Russia to repre- sent the New York Heral<gap reason=illegible>. He says I am responsible for his appointment, having brought him in touch with Ohl. I gave Bernstein many messages to <add>give</add> the Russian people through the press. Menken of the National Security League, and Richard H. Dana, of the Civil Service Reform League, followed. Lincoln Colcord made his usual daily visit to discuss articles for the Public Ledger. May 23, 1917. Esty Stowell, Colonel Haywood and <gap reason=illegible>aptain Arthur Little were early callers. Haywood and Little wished me to use my good offices with the War Department in having the Fifteenth Regiment of the National Guard mustered into the National Service at once. I telephoned Washington to see what could be done. Sir William Wiseman followed to report upon his visit to Washington. Everything is going well as far as our plans are concerned. He has arranged a special code with the Foreign Office so we can talk with the utmost freedom
