present excepting society folk along the Shore. The Attorney General stopped off on his way to Maine and spent the day. He had but little of interest to tell. I asked him <add>when</add> <del/> the Cabinet knew about the President's reply to the Pope. He said not until the afternoon of the 28th at the Cabinet meeting. The note had already been coded and cabled abroad and had been given to the foreign ambassadors. Gregory said there was no dissention concerning it. It was too late to make any changes since it had already been put out. The first proof of the message had in it the word "childish", but after receiving my second letter on the subject, the President evidently called in the first issue and eliminated that word. Gordon tells me that the British Ambassador told him that Jusserand "jumped the bars" when he first read it before the elimination of "childish" was made, and was happy <add>at</add> <del>of</del> the change. Gregory asked how I got along with Lansing. He became Secretary of State without knowing that <add>a</add> condition would e<add>x</add>sist where I had the complete con- fidence of the President and he <add>had</add> <del>did</del> not. Lansing, on the other hand, was Counsellor under Bryan and understood the condition and was willing to become Secretary of State fully realizing my position. Gregory thought, too, that the fact that I had been so largely instrumental in securing Lansing's ap- pointment had some effect upon his actions. Gregory expressed pleasure that the President named Lansing instead of Houston. He thought it would have been impossible for me to get along
