New York on that train. No one excepting Reading, Wiseman, the President and myself really know<del>s</del> what Reading's mission to this country is. Walter Lippman was with me for an hour. He was pleased at the tentative choice of him to help in the peace conference work. I outlined the plan and he was a sympathetic listener. General H. P. Davison of the Red Cross and Mr. Hutchins of the National Bank of Commerce, who is recently from Russia, spent an hour telling of conditions there, and what was being done to better them. Hutchings believes that Ambassa- dor Francis has taken unto himself a German spy-- a woman by the name of Madame de Cram. He told of what Thompson of the Red Cross and others were trying to do by way of helping Kerensky meet German propaganda. He asked me to see the Swedish Commissioner Launbaum (?), whom he considers the <add>financially</add> most important man in Sweden. I am to let him know whether I think it advisable to see him. Justice Brandeis telephoned from Washington asking for an appointment to- morrow. And this reminds me that Brandeis is carrying on a correspondence by cable with the English Jews on the subject of the Zionist Movement. All these cables come through Wiseman, though Brandeis does not know it. He believes they come through Willert of the London Times. I have not covered half the happenings or conversations of the past week or ten days, for it has been impossible to find time to do so. Enough has hap- pened to fill a book. Paderewski asked for an appointment to pick up the threads of Polish pro- blems. They are seeking to establish a provisional government in Poland which they desire this country to recognize. Paderewski is so extravagant in his grat- itude and praise of me that I am always embarrassed. If he were less naive and childlike I would be suspicious of him. He speaks of me as having been sent by
