in November Northcliffe will also go and remain. October <add>2</add> <del/>, 1917. I often weary of my diary, and at times when it should be of greatest interest. It never gives a true picture of the day. So much is done that can- not be recorded and so much work is accomplished by telephone of which there is no record. Lord Reading was the most important visitor of the day. We used the motor again in order to get the fresh air and talk at the same time. In this way we are undisturbed. Our talk largely concerned current matters at issue between our two governments. I find Reading a calm, clear-headed statesman with more of the political than the judicial mind. These talks with him have been of much value to me, because I have become saturated with the British official point of view. Every phase of their governmental action comes up at one time or another as it relates not alone to this country, but to France. Russia, Japan and their colonies. It does make a difference of course and intelligent people recognize it, but it is questionable whether the ordinary man in the street does. Norman Angell was another visitor. He talked of the new work I have in hand, of the war and of its aftermath. We dined with S. R. Bertron at Delmonico's and went to see "Maytime"
