detail, and he told me every intimate thing connected with <add>them</add> <del/>. I was interested in what he had to say about the submarine situation. It happens they bagged four yesterday, perhaps two more. It is the biggest haul they have had in any one day since the war began. He explained how they were overcoming the menace. How many they had caught to date; how many submarines the Germans had; how many were in northern waters and how many in southern, and how many were in commission at one time. The Prime Minister told me the other day that Geddes was anxious to go back to the work of military transportation which he left to come to the Admir- alty. I asked Geddes his reason for this. He went into great detail as to why he thought it was more important for him to do that work than to be First Lord of the Admiralty. He evidently considers that the work of the First Sea Lord can be done by someone else, and that he is the only man who can do the other work as efficiently as it should be done. Geddes expressed wonder at my knowledge of him and <add>his</add> <del/> work as it was the first time we had met. I explained that he was one of the many men I had carefully estimated and had pigeon-holed for future reference. We discussed the control of submarines by mine barrages, and I urged him to close the Straits of Dover and make a finality of that passage. He said he had it in mind. I am sure he has, for Benson had been insisting upon this being done ever since he has been here. And this reminds me that someone told me the other day that the British thought Admiral Sims a first <add>rate</add> <del/> man until Admiral Benson appeared upon the scene. The members of the Mission have made a favorable impression as far as I can learn, and have worked harmoniously. There has not been a discordant note struck, either in public or private. This is the one thing I have been insistent upon and anxious about. I hope the record will continue clear until
