Father, George Wellington Mdes, a manufacturer of fertilizer m Md- ford, son of Theophdus and Ehza Judson (Curtis) Mdes of Mdford. Mother, Mary (Lee) Mdes, daughter of John and Mary (Sheffield) Lee of Lyme, Conn Yale relatives mclude a brother-m-law, Stiles Judson, '85 L Hopkms Grammar School Chemistry course, coxswam Class crew Freshman year Spent summer of 1889 at Connecticut Agncultural Experiment Station, New Haven, m chemical laboratory, Illinois Steel Company, Chicago, 1889-90, first assistant StiHwell & Gladding, analytical chemists, New York City, 1890-92; m charge of laboratory of A O. Little, analytical chemist, Boston, 1892-1900, smce 1900 had been mdependendy engaged as a consulting and analytical chemist in Boston, held a number of patents m the cellulose field, was first to discover commercially valuable cellulose acetates and first to recognize the process of partial hydration of acetated cellulose which opened up new fields m the industry, mventor Miles process of sewage salvage, member Amencan Chemical Society, Amencan Leather Chemists Association, Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, Society of Chemical Industry, and Royal Society of Arts (London), attended Congregational church Married August 25, 1914, m Boston, Ahce Adelle, daughter of Manassa nd Ehza (Donnell) Roden No chddren. Mrs Miles died June 16, 1930 Death due to cerebral hemorrhage and cardiac thrombosis. Buried m Mdford Cemetery Survived by a sister, Miss Martha Curtis Mdes (Music certificate 1918) Another sister, Minnie M Judson (Art certificate 1887), died m 1938
