YALE UNIVERSITY OBITUARY RECORD* YALE COLLEGE Henry Haven Gorton, B.A. 1862. ^.- Bom February 3, 1840, in Waterford, Conn. Died February 8,1940, tn Waterford, Conn. Father, Wilham Gorton of Waterford, tax collector and chairman school committee for a number of years, son of Benjamin and Mehitable (Douglas) Gorton of Waterford Mother, Abiah (Douglas) Gorton; daughter of Robert and Abiah (Douglas) Douglas of Waterford Yale relatives include an uncle, Thomas Douglas (B.A 1831). Attended a pnvate school in Flanders, and Bardett High School, New London, Conn Member Class baseball club Junior and Senior years, Gamma Nu, and Linonia Engaged in farming at Waterford 1862-70 with exception of one year spent in teaching in Hunterstown, Pa , teacher of mathematics in Ringoes, N J, 1871-74, Wyandotte County, Kans, 1874-75, and near Red Bank, N J, 1875-76; in 1876 returned to Waterford; divided his time between farming and teaching, held teaching posts m East Lyme, Niantic, Canaan, and Waterford, on death of his brother Albert, retired from teaching to devote whole time to the Waterford farm which had been in possession of his family since 1771, retired from active work about 1920; school visitor Waterford 1889-1901 and secretary of the board, town treasurer; superintendent Gilead Sunday School 1894-1926; member First Church (Congregational), New London Marned June 10, 1903, in Boston, Mass, Louise Fargis Phillips Phil- bnck, daughter of George and Ellen (Chapell) Phillips. Son Albert Henry Death due to artenosclerotic heart disease with acute cardiac dilatation Buned in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London Survived by wife and son. Since December 4, 1936, Mr. Gorton had enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest living graduate of Yale, he was the sixth graduate to live to be one hundred years of age. *If the father of an alumnus is a Yale graduate, the father's record is not usually given in this volume, but may be found in published form elsewhere
