Sheffield Scientific School 165 Lester Paige Breckenridge, Ph.B. 1881. Bom May 17,-1858, in Meriden, Conn. Died August 22,1940, tn Charlotte, Vt. Father, Moses Paige Breckenridge, general superintendent Westfield (Mass) plant of H. B. Smith Company, Inc , manufacturers of cast iron boders and radiators, son of Wdham and Clarissa (Paige) Breckenndge of Ware, Mass. Mother, Lucretia Lonnda (Wethenll) Breckenndge; daughter of George Washington and Harnet (Richardson) Wethenll of Ware. Westfield High School. Dynamic engineering course, second prize for excellence in mechanical drawing Freshman year, Semor appomtment; Commencement speaker, Class secretary and treasurer Jumor year, Class supper histonan Semor year; member Linonia, Alpha Chi, and York Hall and Chi Phi Instructor m drawmg Lehigh Umversity 1881-82 and mechanical engineering 1881-91 with exception of two years (1884-86) spent m engineering work; professor of mechanical engineering and director mechanical department Michigan State College of Agnculture and Apphed Science 1891-93, professor of mechanical engineering Umversity of Illinois 1893-1909 (organizer Engineering Experiment Station and director 1905-09), Higgin Professor of Mechanical Engineering Yale Umversity 1909-23 and Higgin Professor emeritus 1923-40, chairman department of mechanical engineering 1920-23, made floor plans for Mason Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and planned and designed much of its equipment, an advocate of close cooperation between engineering colleges and industnes, he mtroduced annual Semor Class inspection tnp to plants of engineering mterest, largely instrumental in establishing engineering library and reading room of Sheffield Scientific School, a founder Yale Engineering Association (1914) and Alpha Chapter Tau Beta Pi (1923), member Umversity Councd 1922-23, Alumni Fund agent Class of 1881 S m 1924, became Class president 1921 and chairman 1931, consulting engmeer m field of power, heating, and ventilation; m charge fuel tests technologic branch U S Geological Survey at fuel testing plant, St Louis, 1904-06; chairman advisory board Super-Power Survey for Boston-Washington industnal region 1920-21; member World Power Conference, designed dynamometer cars for use on midwestern radroads 1897-99; mventor of an automatic recording machine 1901; author: The New England Branch of the Breckenridge Family (1904); author and co-author of articles for technical publications; Wdham E Dodge Lecturer at Yale 1918-19, M A Hon Yale 1909, D Eng Umversity of Illinois 1910, resided summers at "The Brackens," North Fernsburg, Vt, and winters m California or Italy, honorary
