178 Yale University Obituary Record States Geological Survey 1889-91, at request of Secretary of Treasury and Secretary of State spent seasons of 1891 and 1892 on Pnbdof Islands studying the fur seal problem, and m 1893 appeared before tribunal convened at Pans to arbitrate fur seal dispute between Umted States and Great Bntam; superintendent North Amencan Commercial Company, Alaska, 1893-99, assistant secretary Umon Pacific and Southern Pacific Radway systems 1899-1902, assistant to president Long Island Radroad Company 1902-04, manager radroad department Fiske & Robmson, bankers, New York City, 1905-15 and partner Robmson & Company, mvestment secunties, 1915 untd retirement January, 1929, mvestment counsel National Academy of Sciences; trustee Jamaica Hospital 1920- 31 (president of the board 1931-33) and Doctors Hospital 1927-41, councdor Geological Society of Amenca, chairman finance committee many years, and editor of its Bulletin 1892-1932, fellow Amencan Association for the Advancement of Science; member Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York and Yale Engmeermg Association Marned June 14, 1888, m Mentor, Ohio, Mary, daughter of President James Abram Garfield, LL.D (B A. Wdhams 1856), and Lucretia (Rudolph) Garfield (Hiram Coll 1850-54) Children: Rudolph, '09 S.; Ruth (B A Vassar 1915), the wife of Herbert Feis (B A Harvard 1916, Ph D 1921), and Margaret (B A Vassar 1919, M D. Columbia 1923). Death due to coronary thrombosis. Ashes mterred m Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland Survived by wife, children, and three grandchddren. Louis Juhus Curtis, Ph.B. 1889.
