Father, Walter Barnum, '10, associated with Electric Boat Company, Groton, Conn., son of Wilham M Barnum, '77, and Annie Theresa (Phelps) Barnum of New York City Mother, Rowena (Stewart) Barnum; daughter of Charles Augustus and Ehsabeth (Wurtz) Stewart of Biddeford, Mame. Yale relatives mclude Wdham H Barnum, '04 S , and Phelps Barnum, '13 (uncles), and Walter B Levering, ^-'33 (cousin) Prepared at Westminster School, Simsbury, Conn , and m Lausanne, Switzerland Freshman Crew Squad and 150-pound crew Freshman year; manager Umversity Soccer Team Junior year, Umversity Crew Jumor and Semor years, member Yale Corinthian Yacht Club, Beta Theta Pi, and Saybrook College (on crew Sophomore year and baseball team Jumor year). With Crowell Publishing Company, New York City, 1936-37, engaged in engmeermg investigations 1938, associated with Wright Aeronautical Corporation, Paterson, N J , 1939-40, member Episcopal church Marned June 12, 1937, m Greenwich, Conn , Lucille, daughter of Louis Ford and Ehsabeth (McCormick) Hall Son* David Burrall Mr and Mrs. Barnum were divorced m 1940 Enlisted as Flying Cadet, Army Air Forces, September 9, 1940, received wmgs and commissioned Second Lieutenant April 25, 1941, at Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Ala , stationed successively at Gunter and Craig fields, Alabama, with Air Force Intelligence, Washmgton, at Mitchel and Sikorsky fields; promoted First Lieutenant February 1, 1942, on May 12, 1942, left for China in command of first group of Army pdots sent to relieve Amencan Volunteer Group under Major General Chennault, initial member 75th Fighter Squadron, 23d Pursuit Group; about August 1 cited for gallantry m action, recommended for Sdver Star, and promoted Captam, later m August was cited again for single-handed action against a large force of Zeros and for this action was awarded Distinguished Flymg Cross on December 23, received official commendation f om General Chennault for planning, executing, and reporting aenal reconnaissance, posthumously awarded An* Medal With Oak Leaf Cluster, and Order of the Purple Heart ' Captam Barnum was shot down dunng a batde near an airdrome m Hunan Province whde attempting to land his plane which had developed engme trouble Buried with full mihtary honors. Survived by son, father, mother, stepmother, two stepsisters, Mrs Robert A Tietze and Audrey Hooper Flasch (B A Smith Coll 1941), the wife of O T. Flasch, and a half brother, Private Humphrey Barnum, A U.S
