Tytus, '32, of Farmington, Conn Frederick James Murphy, Jr., B.S. 1940. Bom September 27, 1916, in Evanston, III. Died December 31, 1942, near Macclenny, Fla. Father, Fredenck James Murphy (B A 1910), assistant comptroller Inter- chemical Corporation, New York City, son of Dennis Henry and Georgina Catherme (Blades) Murphy of Westboro, Mass Mother, Mane Amelia (Wells) Murphy, daughter of Charles Walker and Frances Helene (Dis deBar) Wells of Parkersburg, W Va, Mdan, Ohio, and St. Petersburg, Fla Yale relatives include Wilham H Murphy, '93 (great-uncle), and Augustus L. Wells, *i6 (uncle) King School, Stamford, Conn, Stamford High School, and Phdhps-Andover. Industnal administration course; Freshman Football and Baseball squads; Umversity 150-pound Football Team Semor year, member Timothy Dwight College (football team Jumor year, baseball team two years and captam Semor year) Service engmeer Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Division of Umted Aircraft Corporation, East Hartford, Conn, 1940-41; commissioned Ensign, US. Naval Reserve, July 10, 1940, called to active service June 28, 1941; assistant engme overhaul officer, assembly and repair department, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, June-November, 1941, resigned commission December 3, 1941, to begin Naval Reserve flight training course as seaman (2d class), received preliminary training at U S Naval Reserve Aviation Base, Atlanta, Ga, until March 5, 1942, and then transferred to Naval An* Station, Jacksonville, for advanced flight training, appointed Aviation Cadet, U S Naval Reserve, Apnl 2, 1942; commissioned Ensign November 3, 1942 (to rank from August 11, 1942), and appomted Naval Aviator (heavier than air) Unmarned. Ensign Murphy was killed in an airplane crash whde on active duty attached to the Naval Air Station at Jacksonville Ashes scattered over the Atlantic Ocean Survived by parents, a sister, Mane Jeannette Murphy Stevens (B A. Umv of Michigan 1935), the wife of Wdham Burd Stevens (B S m ChE. Umv of Pennsylvania 1934) of New Rochelle, N Y., and a brother, Wilham Harold Murphy (Dartmouth ex-41) of New York City
