40 Yale University Obituary Record Death due to hypostatic pneumonia Buried in Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven. Survived by a brother, Rev. Arthur S. Phelps, D.D., '86. Another brother, Rev Dryden W. Phellps, Litt.D., '92 D., died in 1931. Professor Phelps bequeathed to Yale his library of over 5,000 volumes and his teaching notes, notes for books and articles, and coundess letters from distinguished friends In 1944 a Liberty ship was named in his honor. Frederick W. Sprague, B.A. 1887. Born October 4, 1865, in Chicago, III Died October 1,1943, in New Yor\ City Father, William Sprague, a glass merchant in Chicago; son of William and Louisa (Jewett) Sprague of Hallowell, Maine. Mother, Caroline Robinson (Smith) Sprague; daughter of Justin Ely and Cornelia (Wetmore) Smith of Hallowell. Yale relatives include two cousins, Edward P. Smith, '94 S, and E Burnham Smith, '98. Chicago Central High School and Higher School for Boys, Chicago. Freshman Baseball Team; Class baseball team Sophomore year; member University Club, Eta Phi, Delta Kappa Epsilon, and Scroll and Key. Associated with Sprague Smith Company, wholesale jobbers of plate and window glass, Chicago, 1887-99; secretary and treasurer Orangine Chemical Company, Chicago, 1899-1914, engaged in land development work, Washington, NC, 1921-25; associated with Lehn & Fink, wholesale druggists, New York City, 1925-28, Motor Improvement Company, Inc., Newark, N J, 1928-35, and American Distilling Company, New York City, 1935-43, member Cathedral of St John the Divine (Episcopal), New York City. Married January 6, 1917, in New York City, Jane Beckwith Winston, daughter of Dr. Lod Beckwith and Emma (Jones) Beckwith. Mrs. Sprague died October 2, 1943 Death due to pneumonia>Ashes interred in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass. Survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Winston Dor- rell of Southbridge, Mass , and a brother, Richard P. Sprague of Wilmette, 111. Another brother, Ralph W. Sprague, '92 S, died in 1939.
