92 Yale Umversity Obituary Record Molton Avery Colton, B.A. 1898. Born October 23, 1872, in Indian Territory Died September 14, 1943, tn Annapolis, Md. Father, Rev. James Hooper Colton (B.A Univ. North Carolina 1855), a Presbytenan minister; missionary to Choctaws m Indian Territory; president Alexander College, Burkesville, Ky ; son of Rev. Simeon Colton (B.A. 1806) and Susan (Chapman) Colton of Summerville and Fayetteville, NC. Mother, Eloise (Avery) Colton; daughter of Clark Molton and Elizabeth T. (Walton) Avery of Morganton, N C. Yale relatives include: Ebenezer Baldwin (B.A. 1763) and Simeon Baldwin (B A. 1781) (great- great-uncles); Jabez Colton (B A 1775) (great-grandfather); Alexander Newton, '84 (cousin), and Henry E. Colton, Jr, '43 S. (nephew). Prepared privately. Taught in public schools of Moore County, N.C, for three years before entering college. Freshman honor division; Scott Prize in French and high oration appointment Junior year; philosophical oration appointment Senior year; member Phi Beta Kappa. Attended Yale Graduate School and instructor in French Yale University 1898-1900. Successively inspector of schools, Manila, Philippine Islands, division superintendent of education for Mindanao and Sulu Archipelago, and for Cavite, Tayabas, and Batangas 1900-03; attended universities of Halle 1903-04, Berlin 1905-06, and Pans 1904-05 and 1908-09 (PhD 1909); teacher of French, German, and Spanish Thacher School, Nordhoff, Calif., 1906-07, professor of romance languages Randolph-Macon Woman's College 1907-08; instructor in modern languages United States Naval Academy 1909-19, associate professor 1919-27, and professor 1927 until retirement 1937, author. La Phonettque Castillane (1909); member Presbytenan church Married October 23, 1919, in New York City, Andree, daughter of Gaston Charles Frederick and Yvonne (Boulard) Stockly. Children: Yvonne Helene and Elizabeth Ann. Death due to coronary occlusion. Buried in Naval Cemetery, Annapolis. Survived by wife, daughters, two sisters, the Misses Suzanne and Clara Colton, and four brothers, James H Colton, Henry E. Colton, '02, W. Francis Colton, '07, and Roger B. Colton, '08 S.
