Married December 27, 1940, in Syracuse, Peggy Lucille, daughter of John Joseph and Esther Lucille (Burdett) McCormick Daughter* Diane Burdett Second Lieutenant, 104th Field Artillery Regiment, New York National Guard, called to active service October 15, 1940; in charge communications, 104th Field Artillery, 1st Battalion, Headquarters Battery, Fort McClellan, October, 1940—April, 1941, attended Field Artillery School, Fort Sill, May-August, 1941, promoted First Lieutenant February 27, 1941, and Captain July 7, 1942; on maneuvers in Louisiana August-October, 1941, stationed at Fort McClellan October-December, 1941, and Camp Haar and Fort Ord December, 1941—March, 1942; communications officer Battalion, Field Artillery, Division, and trial judge advocate and Captain Headquarters Battery, Hilo, March, 1942—October, 1943, and in vicinity of Honolulu October, 1943—May, 1944. Captain Knapp was killed by enemy fire when leading a party to the rescue of wounded men on Saipan Posthumously awarded the Order of the Purple Heart and the Silver Star Survived by wife, daughter, a sister, Miss Grace Marilyn Knapp of Lynn, Mass, a brother, Kingdon Rodger Knapp, and maternal grandmother John Eugene O'Keefe, Jr., B.A. 1936.
