Yale College 191 John Hill Spalding, Class of 1940. Born February 28, 1917, tn Chicago, III. Died January 4, 1944, in Augusta, Ga. Father, Jesse Spalding, '13. Mother, Jean Fredencka (Whiting) Spalding. Yale relatives include* Robert L. Spalding, ex-'95 S. (great-uncle), and Vaughan C. Spalding, '14 (uncle). The Hill School, Pottstown, Pa, and Roxbury Latin School, Boston, entered Yale September, 1936; withdrew June, 1938; Freshman Football Squad; member Chi Psi. Attended University of Texas 1938-39; employed in Texas oil fields for a short time and with Whiting Corporation, Harvey, 111., 1940; member St. Philomena's Church (Roman Catholic), East Hampton, NY Joined Squadron A, Cavalry, New York National Guard, June, 1940; inducted into Army of the United States February, 1941; with 101st Cavalry at Fort Devens until it was mechanized and Squadron A disbanded, received training at Bangor, Maine, July-November, 1942, tail gunner on bomber; put on cadre with rank of staff sergeant 958th Air Base Security Battalion, Camp Campbell, December, 1942; due to knee operation placed on inactive service and sent to Camp Mackall for medical discharge when stricken with pneumonia; moved to Oliver General Hospital, Augusta, December, 1943. Married May 30, 1942, in West Newton, Mass., Elisabeth, daughter of Ernest R. and Esther (Taggart) Cooper. Death due to empyema. Buried in Roman Catholic Cemetery, Chicago Survived by wife, mother (Mrs. R. Elliott Maxwell), two sisters, Jane Clarke Maxwell, the wife of Lieut. Allison Ripley Maxwell, Jr, U S N.R (Princeton ^-'36), and Miss Joyce Bertrande Spalding, a brother, Jesse Spalding, 3d, ^-'39, stepfather, and paternal grandmother. Cyrus Robinson Taylor, B.A. 1940. Born February 8, 1917, in Mount Vernon, N.Y Died June 25, 1944, m the South Pacific Father, Clinton Tallmadge Taylor (B A. Coll. City of New York 1903, LL.B. New York Umv 1905), senior partner Strang & Taylor, lawyers, White Plains, N.Y., president Jefferson Title & Mortgage Company, Mount Vernon; former corporation counsel Mount Vernon, former president Mount Vernon Board of Education; son of Sutherland Gazzam and Elizabeth Regina (Board) Taylor of Mount Vernon.
