198 Yale University Obituary Record John Hislop Hamilton, B.A. 1943. Born October 6, 1920, in Dover, N.J. Died September n, 1943, off Salerno, Italy. Father, Frank W. Hamilton, '08 S., president Ulster Iron Works, Dover; son of Capt Thomas Hamilton and Eunice Ellen (Watrous) Hamilton of Groton, Conn. Mother, Evelyn (Hislop) Hamilton, daughter of John Adamson and Nellie (Barry) Hislop of New London, Conn. Yale relatives include* Frederick P Latimer, '97, and Harry T Hamilton, '04 (uncles), and Frederick P Latimer, Jr, '25, Harry T. Hamilton, Jr., '38, and Lindsay C Hamilton, £^-'43 (cousins). Phillips-Exeter 135-pound Class wresding champion and on Class lacrosse squad Freshman year; on board Yale Daily News Sophomore year, associate editor Junior year, and radio advertising manager Senior year; member N R O.T.C. at Yale (cadet officer with rank of Ensign and commander second platoon August-December, 1942), Timothy Dwight College (coxswain of crew), Yale Political Umon, Zeta Psi, and The Cloister and Book and Snake, awarded B.A. December 19, 1942. Member Phillips-Exeter Academy Church. Married December 19, 1942, in New Haven, Conn., Grace Elizabeth, daughter of William James and Jeannette (Searing) Thorndycraft. Commissioned Ensign, U.S Naval Reserve, December 19, 1942; reported for active duty January 4, 1943; temporarily stationed at Recife, Brazil, in communications work; Junior Officer, in six-inch gun turret, cruiser U S S. , on convoy work in the South Atlantic; assigned as Junior Officer in Fire Control Center April, 1943; took part in Sicilian and Italian invasions. Ensign Hamilton lost his life on his cruiser while covering the Allied landing at Salerno. Buried at sea off Malta. Posthumously awarded the Order of the Purple Heart Survived by wife, parents, and a brother, Lieut. Frank W. Hamilton, Jr, '40 S., U S.N.R. Cyrus LaRue Munson, Class of 1943. Born November 12, 1920, in Menon, Pa. Died September 16, 1943, in New Salem, Ore.
