Died September 3, 1943, in the South Pacific area. Father, Richard Greenough Souther (B S. in M.E. Washington Univ. [Mo ] 1914) of Pelham, N.Y.; in advertising department Curtis Publishing Company, New York City Mother, Frances (Jones) Souther. Pelham High School Entered Yale September, 1939, passed four Civilian Pilot Training courses, given in cooperation with Civil Aeronautics Administration, during college year 1940-41; member Silhman College (football team Sophomore year). Withdrew from college June, 1941, to enlist in U S. Naval Reserve as member Second Yale Naval Aviation Unit; preliminary flight training Naval Reserve Air Base, Floyd Bennett Field, October-December, 1941; aviation cadet U S Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, December, 1941— May 16,1942, and Miami May 22-July; received wings and commissioned Second Lieutenant, U S Marine Corps Reserve, June 25, 1942; promoted First Lieutenant April 10, 1943, sent overseas February, 1943. Lieutenant Souther lost his life in an airplane crash due to a defective plane Survived by parents, a brother, John W. Souther, and a grandmother. Joseph Neibert Carpenter, 3d, Class of 1944. Born December 13, 1920, in New Yor\ City. Died February 25, 1944, near Great Falls, S C Father, Joseph Neibert Carpenter (Cornell Umv ex-16), associated with Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Beane, brokers, New York City. Mother,, Esther Kinnecut (Thompson) Carpenter St Paul's School, Concord, N H , and Milton (Mass.) Academy. Entered Yale September, 1940; member Fence Club, Davenport College, and St James' Church (Episcopal), New York City.
