Civil engineering course; Commencement speaker; member Vernon Hall and Phi Gamma Delta Surveyor New York, West Shore and Buffalo Railroad, Newburgh, N.Y, 1882; principal Nonotuck Grammar School, Holyoke, 1883-84, Thompsonville (Conn ) High School 1884-89, and Manchester (Conn ) Grammar School 1889-93; superintendent of schools Oxford, Mass., 1893- 1902, Amesbury 1902-06, and Hudson 1906-18; teacher and supervisor of practice teaching State Teachers College, Framingham, 1918 until retirement 1930, contributed articles on geography to Popular Education, member Framingham Group School Superintendents (secretary and president), Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (secretary), New England Association of School Superintendents, and National Education Association, attended Unitarian church. Marned December 25, 1883, in Holyoke, Maria Louise, daughter of James William and Mary Ann (Perry) Burr. Children: Faith Elderkin (B A Mount Holyoke Coll. 1906), the wife of George Otis Rhodes; Warren Burr, '06 S ; Rachel (died November 11, 1887); and Helen, the wife of George Stetson Patterson. Mrs. Lyman died January 6, 1930. Death due to senility. Buried in Forest Dale Cemetery,-Holyoke. Survived by two daughters, son, and one grandson. Edward Wells Penfield, Ph.B. 1883. Born June 27,1863, in New Yor\ City Died March 29, 1944, in Los Angeles, Calif. Father, Henry Day Penfield, president H D. & L C Penfield, general insurance agency, Chicago, son of Samuel Lewis and Ximena (Taylor) Penfield of Catskill-on-Hudson, N.Y. Mother, Martha Estelle (Wells) Penfield; daughter of Moses and Love (Chapin) Wells of Wheaton, 111. Yale relatives include Arthur B Wells, '84, and Bradford Wells, '01 S.
