Sheffield Scientific School 285 Francis Mercer Hackley, Class of 1941 S. Born November 13, 1918, in Oakfield, N Y Died July 4, 1943, over France. Father, Francis Alexander Hackley, owner Hackley Hardware Store, Oakfield. Mother, Elizabeth Asman (Armstrong) Hackley (Middlebury Coll, <?.r-'oo). Oakfield High School Entered Yale September, 1937, member Alpha Chi Sigma and St Michael's Church (Episcopal), Oakfield Withdrew from college June 14, 1940, entered Army of the United States May, 1941; assigned to 4th Armored Division, transferped to medical unit, Pine Camp, accepted as air cadet June, 1942, and transferred to Army Air Forces, ordered for training at Maxwell Field August 1, 1942, attended navigation school, Monroe, La., October 12, 1942, received wings and commissioned Second Lieutenant January 16,1943, advanced training at Gowen Field, Wendover Field, Sioux City (Iowa) Army Air Base, and Kearney Army Air Forces Facility; went overseas June 6, 1943; navigator of a Flying Fortress, Eighth Air Force, based in England. Lieutenant Hackley lost his life while returning from a mission over Le Mans, France. Buried near Sees, France Posthumously awarded the Order of the Purple Heart and official commendation from his commanding officer. Survived by parents, a sister, Ruth Elizabeth Hackley George (B A. Wellesley Coll. 1934), the wife of Albert A. George of Evanston, 111, and a brother, Reginald A. Hackley, '31 S. Edward Cyprian Digan, B.S. 1942. Born July 25, 1921, in Brooklyn, N Y. Died July 12, 1943, in Sicily Father, Thomas Joseph Digan, vice-president United States Steel Export Company, New York City; son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Heaphy) Digan of Brooklyn Mother, Margaret Ann (Meagher) Digan; daughter of Thomas Francis and Margaret (Ryan) Meagher of New York City. Bishop Loughhn Memorial High School, Brooklyn Freshman Cross- Country Team; on Vanderbdt basketball team and crew Sophomore year, member the More Club and Trumbull College (basketball team Junior year and touch football team Senior year). Member St Agnes Church (Catholic), Rockville Centre, N.Y Unmarried Enlisted in Army of the United States July 15,1942, received basic training at Camp Gruber; attended Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning;
