304 Yale University Obituary Record Hollister Hall, LittD., L.H.D. (B A. Hamilton Coll. 1859, PhD. 1875; LL.B. Columbia Univ. 1865), and Fannie Murden (Dederick) Hall of New York City. Ridgefield (Conn.) School for Boys; B.A. Hamilton College 1936 (member Alpha Delta Phi); attended Yale School of Medicine 1937-41 (MX). 1941); interne Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, July 1, 1941—June 30, 1942, and appointed assistant resident in surgery there July 1,1942; granted license to practice in Connecticut July, 1942; member First Presbyterian Church, Mount Vernon, N.Y. Unmarried Appointed assistant surgeon, with rank of Lieutenant (j.g.), Medical Corps, U S. Naval Reserve, May 18, 1942 (to rank from April 20, 1942); on active duty at U S Naval Hospital, Newport, July 15, 1942, until September 17, 1942, when transferred to Bath, Maine, for duty in connection with outfitting the U.S.S. , a destroyer; medical officer aboard that vessel when placed in commission. Lieutenant Bates was reported missing in action as of February 1, 1943, when the was sunk in an engagement with enemy planes south of Savo Island. In compliance with Section 5 of Public Law 490, as amended, the presumptive date of death was fixed as February 2,1944. Posthumously awarded the Order of the Purple Heart. Survived by mother, a brother, George Page Bates, USN.R (B.A Hamilton Coll 1936), and a half brother, Franklin S. Bates, '14. Another half brother, Harold S. Bates, '09, died in 1919.
