Father, Henry Howard Harper of Berlin, Mass.; retired author and publisher; son of Benjamin J. and Eliza (Rector) Harper of Bennington, Vt Mother, Marguerite Rogers (Young) Harper; daughter of James Carlton and Etta (Rogers) Young of Minneapolis, Minn. St. Mark's School, Southboro, Mass Class debating team Freshman year; Yale Political Union Sophomore year; drama critic and producer of radio programs Yale Daily News Senior year; member Jonathan Edwards College Attended Columbia University School of Law 1940-41; withdrew December, 1941, to enter active service in Army Air Forces. Unmarried. Enlisted Company L, 7th Regiment, New York National Guard, December 20, 1940; promoted private (1st class) April, 1941; primary student Army Air Forces December 29, 1941; received wings and commissioned Second Lieutenant; assigned to Fort Meyers as an instructor and at Kellogg Field, Mich.; test pUot on medium bomber Hunter Field, Ga ; sent overseas to England January, 1944; with 391st Bomber Group, 584th Squadron; flight commander B-26 Marauder Group; took part in invasion of France and participated in about forty-five-missions; promoted Captain in 1944. Captain Harper was killed in a bombing mission over Germany November 21, 1944 Posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement on aerial flight June 13, 1944, the Air Medal with one Silver and three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious achievement in 1944, the Order of the Purple Heart, and Presidential Citation Survived by father.
