Yale College 211 Member V-7 program of U S. Naval Reserve while at Yale; attended Midshipmen's School, Northwestern University, January 2-Apnl, 1943 (graduated second in the class); commissioned Ensign, U.S. Naval Reserve, April 23, 1943; promoted Lieutenant (j g ) July, 1944; at Radar School, San Diego, May-June, 1943; communications officer at Pearl Harbor July-August; assistant gunnery officer on destroyer U.S S. Spence — a member of Destroyer Squadron 23 — from August 3, 1943, to July, 1944, and gunnery officer September-December, 1944; while serving aboard the Spence participated in various engagements in the Pacific area, including support of the landing on Treasury Island and the bombardment of Kavieng, Buka, Shortlands, Bougainville, and Rota islands; the Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to Destroyer Squadron 23 for extraordinary heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces during Solomon Islands campaign November 1, 1943-February 23, 1944 Lieutenant McClelland lost his life when his ship sank in a typhoon. Survived by parents, a sister, Jean Kearny McClelland Barrett (B A. Smith Coll. 1937),tne wu°e °f Julian S. Barrett, '34 S, and two brothers, James F. McClelland, Jr., '40, and Capt. George K. McClelland, '42, U.S.M.C.R. John Helm Maclean, B.A. 1943. Born July 31, 1921, tn Haverford, Pa. Died July 21, 1944, in France. Father, Malcolm Roderick Maclean (B.S. in M.E, Georgia School of Technology 1906; special student Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, 1906-07), formerly sales manager Penn Seaboard Steel Corporation, Haverford, and engaged in farming in Savannah, Ga ; son of Malcolm and Mary Mcintosh (Mills) Maclean of Loch Maddy, North Uist, Scotland. Mother, Emily Manott (Helm) Maclean; daughter of John and Lucy (Washington) Helm of Louisville, Ky. Asheville (N.C.) School for Boys and The Hill School, Pottstown, Pa Scholar of the second rank Freshman year; honorable mention Patterson Prize in American Politics and high oration appointment Senior year; member Yale Community Council, Undergraduate War Council, and Undergraduate Board of Deacons Senior year; on editorial board Yale Daily News three years (author Passing Glances and Current Comment, assignment editor Senior year); member Yale Political Union, Davenport College (touch football team three years), R O T.C. at Yale (battalion commander Senior year), Elizabethan Club (board of governors Senior year), Delta Kappa Epsilon, Skull and Bones, and Phi Beta Kappa; awarded B A.
