238 Yale University Obituary Record A bridge budt by the 290th Engineers at Kunzelsau, Germany, has been named the Robert Hott Memorial Bridge. John Boyd Mason, Class of 1945W (October). Born November 19, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio. Died December 10, 1944, in France. Father, Samuel Worcester Mason (George Washington Univ. ex-i6\ LL B Baldwin-Wallace Coll 1918), vice-president The Ottawa Hills Company, Toledo Mother, Ophelia Adeha (Smith) Mason Ottawa Hills High School, Toledo. Entered Yale m October, 1942; member Pierson College and Pilgrim Congregational Church, Toledo. Unmarried. Withdrew from college and entered Army of the United States as private June 30,1943, basic training, Engineers, Fort Belvoir, July 14-Novem- ber 25, 1943; assigned to Army Specialized Training Program at State University of Iowa February-April, 1944; upon discontinuance of program transferred to Camp Phillips May-August, 1944, and assigned to Infantry; promoted private (1st class) August, 1944; sent overseas with 324th Infantry, 44th Division, in September, 1944. Pfc Mason was killed while serving as a scout when his unit was assigned the mission of securing a railroad crossing south of Meirhauf, France. Survived by parents and three sisters, Mrs. Crary Davis, Jr, of Westport, Conn, Anita Elizabeth Mason (B A. DePauw Univ. 1942) of Toledo, and Carol Mason Bncher (B.A. DePauw Univ. 1944), the wife of Ralph B. Bncher of St Charles, 111. Thomas McClure Owen, Jr., Class of 1945W (October). Born May 6, 1924, in New Brunswic\, N J. Died February 23, 1945, in Rural Retreat, Va. Father, Thomas McClure Owen, president Harmon Oil Company, Inc., New Haven, Conn. Mother, Mildred (McBurney) Owen (grad. New Jersey State Teachers Coll 1918). Hopkins Grammar School, New Haven Entered Yale in October, 1942; Freshman Football Team, member Branford College and Church of St. James the Apostle (Episcopal), New Haven. Unmarried. Member V-12 Navy Unit at Yale July, 1943-July 1, 1944; detached from the Unit and transferred to U S Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at Northwestern University July 1,1944 (commissioned Ensign, U.S.N.R., November 22, 1944); stationed at Miami Beach, Fla.
