Hemingway Post 1935-36; department commander and chairman National Defense Committee 1938- 39), American Legion (commander Post 47 during 1920 and 1921, member executive committee 1921-24), New Haven Teachers League (first vice-president 1933-34), Connecticut Elementary Principals Association, Connecticut State Teachers Association, Masonic order, and Church of the Epiphany (Episcopal), New Haven. Married April 13, 191 o, in Plantsville, Conn., Grace Mary, daughter of Emery Watrous and Louise (Erbe) Doohtde. Son* Thomas Howard (grad. Parks Air Coll. 1931). Death due to carcinoma. Buried in Stanwich Cemetery, Greenwich Survived by wife, son, ode grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Fred Holly of Greenwich and Susan L Terrill, the wife of Arthur P. Terrill, '08 S , and three brothers, Howard William Lockhart of St. Joseph, Mo., John William Lockhart of Greenwich, and Joseph A. Lockhart, '11 L. Haines Rennyson Merritt, Ph.B. 1909. Born February n, 1887, in East Aurora, N.Y. Died September 29, 1944, tn Buffalo, N Y Father, Charles Wesley Merritt (B.A. Hamilton Coll. 1866, M A 1872, LL.B. 1875), a lawyer in East Aurora; principal East Aurora Academy; son of Wilson and Jane (Wesley) Merritt of King Ferry, N.Y. Mother, Anna Mary (Riley) Merritt, daughter of Aaron and Margaret Riley of East Aurora. Yale relatives include a brother, Aaron R. Merntt, '05. East Aurora High School; attended University of Michigan 1905-06. Forestry course; Freshman Tennis and Soccer teams; degree awarded in 1910 with enrollment in Class of 1909 S. Associated with Townsend & Fleming, landscape gardeners, Buffalo and Cleveland, 1910-11; owner Green Top Farm, East Aurora, 1910-44 and associated with various firms in East Aurora (secretary and treasurer Griggs & Ball Company, coal, feed, fertilizer, and mason's materials, 1917-24 and vice-president 1924-44; partner East Aurora Gravel & Excavating Company 1925-27; secretary Cefah-Hall Construction Company 1931-33); member East Aurora Board of Trade, Masonic order, and First Presbytenan Church, East Aurora.
