Father, James Madison Erwin, a farmer in Ohio, and employed in lumber yards; son of Robert Louis and Rachel (Thompson) Erwin who lived near Jackson. Mother, Elizabeth (Stout) Erwin; daughter of George Henry and Abigail (Glass) Stout of Baltimore, Md. Wellston High School and Morgan Academy, Jackson, B A Ohio Northern University 1903; M A. Defiance College 1906, graduate student in history and economics Yale University 1906-07 (M A 1907) and engaged in study and research Defiance College 1907-08; supervising principal Wells Grade School, Wellston, 1892-94 and Central High School, Wellston, 1894-1904; principal Defiance (Ohio) High School 1904-06; superintendent Steubenville (Ohio) public schools 1908 until retirement 1933; ScD Defiance College 1910; member National Education Association and Hamline Methodist Church, Steubenville, and First Methodist Church, Wellston. Married November 1, 1894, in Wellston, Mary Ellen, daughter of George MacDonald and Sara (Davies) Stewart Daughters* Orne Louise (B.A. Ohio Wesleyan Coll 1918), the wife of Donald Sterrett Wood; Mary Roberta (B A. Ohio Univ. 1937), the wife of Nelson Allen Cntes (B.A. Ohio Univ. 1937, M A 1939); and Karlene Ehzabeth, the wife of Col Clayton DuBosque, 'n S Mrs Ervin died August 27, 1941. Death due to a cerebral hemorrhage Buried in Ridgewood Cemetery, Wellston. Survived by daughters and four grandchildren.
