342 Yale University Obituary Record William Melvin Kober, M.D. 1938. Born March 16, 1912, in Little Roc\, Ar\. Died August 29, 1944, in France. Father, Albert Kober, a salesman for Colonial Baking Company, Litde Rock; son of Chris John and Kathenne (Dieteile) Kober of Germany. Mother, Bertha (Weigelt) Kober; daughter of Rhinhardt and Caroline (Beiman) Weigelt of Breslau, Germany. B A. Columbia University 1934; attended Yale School of Medicine 1934-38 (M.D. 1938); interne in obstetrics and gynecology Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City, 1938-40; physician in Litde Rock 1940-41; member Evangelical Lutheran Church, Litde Rock. Married January 6, 1936, in New York City, Ethel May, daughter of Michael Francis and Ethel May (Mulvey) Sulhvan and sister of Edward M. Sullivan, '36 M. Children: Michael William, Karen Ashley, and John Edward. Commissioned First Lieutenant, Medical Corps, Army of the United States, August 1, 1941; assigned as squadron surgeon, 4th Cavalry, Medical Detachment, Fort Meade, September 1, 1941-December, 1943; detached duty at Medical Field Service School, Tenth Refresher Course, Carlisle, Pa, January i-March 1, 1942; promoted Captain May 25, 1942; attended course in tropical medicine, Army Medical School, Washington, March-April, 1943; on maneuvers with 4th Cavalry in Louisiana and at desert training center, California; transferred to Camp Maxey, Texas; sent overseas December, 1943; commanding officer of medical detachment, 24th Cavalry, in England December, 1943-June, 1944, and squadron surgeon in France June-August. Captain Kober was killed when his ambulance received a direct hit from enemy fire Buried in an American cemetery in France. Survived by wife, children, father (died May 5, 1945), mother, two sisters, the Misses Katherine Anne and Alvina Freda Kober of Little Rock, and five brothers, Otto Emil Kober of Pawtucket, RI, Rudolph Edwin Kober, and John, Chris, and Clemens Kober of Litde Rock. Maurice Norman Manning, M.D. 1942. Born July 17, 1914, in Auburn, Wash. Died May 18, 1945, off Okinawa, Ryu\yu Islands. Father, Maurice Norman Manning, a merchant with United Growers, Inc., Beaverton, Ore ; son of Levi Ben and Mary (Dee) Manning of Portland, Ore. Mother, Louise Constance (Jahens) Manning; daughter of Herman William and Rachel Mary Jahens of Pordand.
