376 Yale University Obituary Record DOCTOR OF LAW Earley Emmett Caple, J.D. 1924. Born August 13, 1893, in Portsmouth, Va. Died November 15, 1944, in New Haveny Conn. Father, Emmett Liggins Caple, a machinist and Baptist minister in Portsmouth, and Stratford, Conn. Mother, Pinkey Gorham (Johnson) Caple. New Haven High School; attended Yale College 1912-17 and 1919- 20, Yale School of Music 1918-19, and Yale School of Law 1920-24 (J.D. 1924; member Alpha Phi Alpha); successively clerk in charge of stores for maintenance department, and assistant to equipment engineer Remington Arms Company, Inc, Bridgeport, Conn, 1916-20; admitted to Connecticut bar 1925; lawyer in New Haven 1925-44; active in city politics and justice of the peace New Haven 1930-44; president Negro Republican State Organization 1943-44; on board of directors Dixwell Community House; member National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Emmanuel Baptist Church, New Haven. Married April 26, 1924, in New Haven, Romietta Leonora Jackson Hatcher, daughter of Robert Henry and Henrietta Louise (Frisby) Jackson. Death due to cerebral accident. Buried in Westville Cemetery, New Haven. Survived by wife, two stepchildren, Natalie Roberta Hatcher (Mrs. Leslie Gordneer) and Theodore William Hatcher, Jr, and a sister, Miss Olive Caple of New Haven.
