Mother, Martha Elizabeth (Washburn) Nichols; daughter of Charles Lorenzo and Elizabeth Maria (Strong) Washburn of Belchertown. Holyoke (Mass) High School and Hillhouse High School, New Haven Honors in English composition Sophomore year; first dispute appointment and special honors in English Senior year; second dispute appomtment Jumor year, awarded Yale Literary Magazine triangle Senior year, member Chi Delta Theta.
