236 Yale University Obituary Record man year, member Saybrook College (crew Sophomore year) and NROTC at Yale, awarded B A October 25, 1943, as of the Class of 1944 Member Methodist church, Stratford Unmarried Commissioned Ensign, U S Naval Reserve, June 21, 1943, promoted Lieutenant (j g ) February 23, 1945, served on U S S Twiggs in active combat May, 1944-June, 1945, in invasions of Leyte, Lingayen, Iwo, and Okinawa Lieutenant Weaver lost his life when the Twiggs was torpedoed and sunk off Okinawa Posthumously awarded the Order of the Purple Heart Survived by parents, a sister, Miss Delight Weaver, and a brother, Daniels Weaver, all of Stratford, and maternal grandmother EDWARD BURRELL FELDMEIER CLASS OF I945W Born March 24, 1924, in Utica, NY Died March 5, 1945, on Iwo Jima Father, Harvey Feldmeier (B E Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst 1892), chief engineer Cherry-Burrell Corporation, creamery supplies, Chicago, son of Max and Elvira (d'Asnoy) Feldmeier Mother, Lela Blod- wen (Lumley) Feldmeier, daughter of William F and Elizabeth (Pugh) Lumley Little Falls (N Y ) High School and The Choate School, Walhngford, Conn Entered Yale in July, 1942 Member First Presbyterian Church, Little Falls Unmarried Withdrew from college December, 1942, and enlisted as private in U S Marine Corps January, 1943, received boot training at Parns Island January-March, at Parachute Training School, New River, N C , March- June (graduated and promoted private [1st class] April 26, 1943), with 4th Parachute Battalion, Camp Pendleton, June-December, 1943, and squad leader of a rifle platoon, Company A, 27th Marines, Fifth Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, January-July, 1944, promoted corporal in April, 1944, went overseas in August, 1944, and stationed in Hawaii, his division took part in the initial assault on Iwo Jima February 19, 1945, awarded Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star Corporal Feldmeier was killed in action. Buried in Fifth Marine Division Cemetery, Iwo Jima Posthumously awarded the Order of the Purple Heart. Survived by mother (Mrs W Randall Whitman), a sister, Elizabeth Jane Feldmeier Brereton (B A. Wellesley 1940; MA Cornell 1942), the wife of John Brereton (B S Cornell 1938, Ph D 1942), of Larchmont, N Y, and two brothers, Allen Lloyd Feldmeier (B S United States Naval Academy 1941 Feb) of Glenview, 111, and Robert Harvey Feldmeier (Princeton 1940-42) of Syracuse, NY DUNCAN FORBES, JR CLASS OF I945W Bom December 8,1922, in Cleveland, Ohio Died December 7,1944, tn Aachen, Germany Father, Duncan Forbes, publisher and advertising executive in Chicago, son of Duncan and Sarah (Lunt) Forbes of Liverpool, England Mother, Ellen (Scott) Forbes, daughter of David and Grace Livingston (Lindsay) Scott of Edinburgh, Scotland The Choate School, Walhngford, Conn Entered Yale in July, 1942, member Branford College Member St James' Church (Episcopal), Chicago Unmarned Withdrew from college in February, 1943, and enlisted in Motorized Field Artillery, Army of the Umted States, received basic training at Fort Sill, February-April, promoted private (1st class) June, 1943, assigned to Army Specialized Training Program, St Louis University, and studied for Army Intelligence Service June, 1943- January, 1944, sent overseas in May, 1944, trained in England and France during summer of 1944 and then sent to Normandy and Belgium, his first combat assignment was with British-Canadian Motorized Unit in Holland, in Germany in November, 1944, with Battery A, 434th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (connected with the "Lucky Seven" Motorized Unit that made combat history at Bastogne) Pnvate Forbes was killed when his dugout caved in under a direct artillery hit.
