Unmarned Withdrew from college November 5, 1941, enlisted as aviation cadet, US Army Air Forces, November 20, 1941, received training at advanced fighter school Moultrie, Ga, spring of 1942 and operational training at Rentschler Field summer of 1942, commissioned Second Lieutenant (Pursuit Pilot) August 5, 1942, went overseas as fighter pilot with 87th Fighter Squadron, 79th Fighter Group, in November, 1942; attached to British Eighth Army in Tunisia, North Africa, and had completed eight operational missions Lieutenant McDonnell was killed in action when his j>lane was shot down by a German fighter plane while escorting a bombing mission He left the protection of his squadron to go to the aid of a squadron mate who had a German fighter on his tail, and thereby gave his life to save a friend Awarded the Air Medal Survived by parents and two sisters, Ralphine Elizabeth McDonnell Barry, the wife of Major Arthur Robert Barry, USA.
