*74 Yale Umversity Obituary Record Lynde (Danforth) Eberle, daughter of Richard Eugene and Lillian (Lynde) Danforth of Skaneateles, NY Pebble Hill School, De Witt, NY, and The Loomis School, Windsor, Conn Entered Yale in September, 1941, Freshman Hockey and Track teams, University Glee Club Sophomore year, member Yale Key and St Anthony Hall and Delta Psi Member St James Church (Episcopal), Skaneateles Unmarried Withdrew from college February 1, 1943, to enter US Naval Air Corps, stationed successively at Cornell University and at Chapel Hill, NC, Olathe, Kans, and Pensacola, Fla , commissioned Ensign May 16, 1944, received operational training at Melbourne, Fla, May-July, 1944, and Glen view, 111, August 2-7, 1944, transferred to west coast in August, 1944, and went overseas in October, section leader fighter planes, Bombing Squadron 6, on carrier USS Hancoc\, operated up and down the Ryukyu Islands supporting the Okinawa invasion, raided Honshu, and participated in the Inland Sea raid, awarded Distinguished Flying Cross and Na\y Air Medal with three Gold Stars Ensign Eberle was killed in an operational accident Survived by father, mother (Mrs J McClellan Withrow), a sister, Jane Eberle Hawley (Vassar 1937-39), the wife of William Gere Hawley, Jr, of Skaneateles, a brother, Richard Danforth Eberle (Hamilton 1939-42, MD Syracuse 1945) of Syracuse, N Y, and maternal grandmother PETER WILLIAM SOMMER CLASS OF I945W Born September 4, 1924, in Peoria, III Missing in action January 20, 1945, over the Enghsh Channel Presumptive date of death January 21, 1946 Father, Henry Getz Sommer, chairman board of directors Keystone Steel and Wire Company, Peona, son of Peter W and Elizabeth (Getz) Sommer of Peona Mother, Dorothy (Wilson) Sommer; daughter of William Everett and Mary Ann (Hudson) Wilson of Terre Haute, Ind Western Military Academy, Alton, 111, Spalding Institute, Peoria, and Philhps-Andover. Entered Yale in July, 1942; member St Paul's Church (Episcopal), Peoria Married June 11, 1944, in Sioux City, Iowa, Mary Lou Frederick (Rollins Coll Class of 1948), daughter of Otto and Olive Eva Jane (Clark) Frederick Enlisted in US Army Air Forces October, 1942, withdrew from college February, 1943, successively in training at Atlantic City, Spnngfield, Mass, Nashville, Tenn, Montgomery, Ala, Jackson, Tenn , and at Fort Myers, Fla , aviation cadet, Advanced Navigation School, Selman Field, January-April, 1944, received aerial navigator's wings and commissioned Second Lieutenant April 22, 1944, received B-17 bomber crew operational training at Sioux City May-July, 1944, and Henngton, Kans, July 10-19, 1944, went overseas July 25, 1944, as aerial navigator of a Flying Fortress, 7th Squadron, 34th Bomber Group, Eighth Air Force, and stationed near Stow- market, Suffolk, England, promoted First Lieutenant February 5, 1945, participated in twenty-one missions over Germany; awarded Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters Lieutenant Sommer was reported missing in action January 20, 1945 His plane was approaching the assembly point for a mission over Germany when the No 1 engine burst into flames, he bailed out in the vicinity of the mouth of the Stour River, South of Ipswich, England, and was never found (In compliance with Section 5 of Public Law 490, as amended, the presumptive date of death was fixed as January 21, 1946 ) Survived by wife, parents, a sister, Marjone Sommer (Rollins Coll 1946-) of Peoria, and a brother, Paul Wilson Sommer (B S Massachusetts Inst Technology 1942) of Peoria
