Hon 1873), founder and president Connecticut Savings Bank, New Haven, and a manufacturer; member Congress from Second District of Connecticut 1861-65; Governor of Connecticut 1867-69 and 1870-71; U.S. Senator 1875-77; son of James and Nancy (Griswold) English. Mother, Caroline Augusta (Fowler) English; daughter of Timothy and Patty (Townsend) Fowler. Yale relatives include two grandsons, Henry Woodruff English, *43, and Paul Barbeau Vaile, Jr, Class of 1952 E. Collegiate Preparatory Institute, New Haven, and prepared privately with Horace Day (B.A. 1836); special student Sheffield Scientific School 1871-72 (member Delta Psi); LLB. Yale 1874 (Class secretary); banker, industrialist, and philanthropist in New Haven; trustee Connecticut Savings Bank 1890-1941 (president 1894-1933); director First National Bank and Trust Company of New Haven 1890-1947; became part owner New Haven Morning Journal and Couner (later New Haven Journal- Couner) 1907, director New Haven Clock Company, Bristol (Conn ) Brass Company, and Bristol Manufacturing Company, appointed secretary East Rock Park Commission 1887; secretary-treasurer New Haven Board of Park Commissioners 1888-1938 and member until 1947; member Proprietors Committee which controls New Haven Green (central square), and State Police Commission; trustee YM.CA; director General Hospital Society of Connecticut, New Haven Dispensary, and New Haven Colony Historical Society (in 1891 he gave funds for former building at Grove Street and Hillhouse Avenue in memory of his parents); member American Historical Association, Oquossoc Angling Association of Maine, and St. Paul's Church (Episcopal), New Haven Married June 5,1888, in Brookline, Mass, Ahce Nancy, daughter of Charles Watson and Mary Ehzabeth (Towne) Kimball Children: Harold Kimball, '13 S (died January 29, 1950); Philip Henry, '15, and Alice Marian (Yale School of the Fine Arts 1915-17), the wife of Paul B. Vaile, '14 S. Mrs English died July 8, 1934 Death due to uremia. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven Survived by children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren In 1893 the Alice Kimball English Fund was established at Yale by Mr and Mrs English to provide traveling fellowships in the School of the Fine Arts, and in 1930 in honor of his wife Mr English established a fund in the School of Medicine to further the work of the Human Welfare Group.
