Abstract: In the center of a panelled ballroom, a couple dance together, an older man standing behind his younger, pretty partner holds her outstretched hands by the finger-tips. She looks serious; he leers towards her. On each side of the room seated elderly spectators are in conversation pointing to, or looking at, the dancers. On the right a fiddler and a flute-player in a small musician's gallery play to the dancers and spectators below. Lighted candles are in carved sconces on the wall
