Abstract: The interior of a jeweller's shop, indicated only by three necklaces festooned on the wall and by a door giving on to the street. A lady sits between two men; one (left) points insinuatingly to a box of ear-rings which he holds, the other applies a boring instrument to her left ear. To her left, a dog barks as he looks up at her startled face. Behind, a weeping schoolboy with a bag of books is being birched by a young woman. Through the door are seen a Highlander blowing bagpipes and a milkmaid screaming for custom
