Abstract: Satirical portrait of Adoniram Byfield, with the Devil at his shoulder blowing at a child's toy windmill fixed on Byfield's hat; the vanes are labelled "Hypocrisy", "Lust", "Pride" and "Covetousness". Lettered with speech ribbons: the Devil saying, "He do's my business bravely"; Byfield, "Needs must when the Devil drives."

Provenance: Formerly owned by Horace Walpole. Sold at the 1842 Strawberry Hill Sale, lot 226 on day 2. Gift of Joseph Verner Reed (Yale 1926) to the Yale Library, 1958. Portions were transferred to Lewis Walpole Library 1960. For other items from this gift refer to Beinecke Library's GEN MSS 1000.
