Abstract: A comely widow kneels in profile to the left, facing an upright chair; in her left hand is a handkerchief; her weeds reach from her head to the ground. Her prayer expresses grief, resignation for the loss of three husbands, and a desire for more with, if necessary, a seventh in old age.--British Museum online catalogue
