Abstract: "A fat elderly John Bull kneels in profile to the left, clasping his hands above the seat of a chair on which lies a long tobacco pipe. On the floor is a frothing tankard inscribed 'Golden Lion'. On shelves (right) are small spirit-casks, punch-bowls, &c. He prays to 'Jolly Silenus', asking for success to his 'old Brown Stout', brewed with the help of tobacco and treacle; for success with a certain rich widow, and for 'plenty of smuggled spirits and protection from the Excise-man'."--British Museum online catalogue
