Portrait after Reynolds (Mannings 1819/1821); standing three-quarter length to left and leaning his right elbow on table, his right hand to his cheek, eyes to front, wearing plain coat and waistcoat, lace collar and cuffs; published second state. The objects on the table are a print of the Roman eagle at Strawberry Hill, which Walpole considered 'one of the finest pieces of Greek sculpture in the world' (see Description of Strawberry Hill, Works, v. ii, p. 463), an ink pot and quill; a roll of manuscript, and three books

On the back of the picture which hung in his bedroom, Walpole copied a passage in Latin from de Thou's autobiography. - Provenance
- Formerly owned by Horace Walpole with his inscription in Latin, formerly mounted on the back, now detached. Sold at the Strawberry Hill sale, day xxii lot 26 and bought by the Hon. and Rev. Horace Cholmondeley, £1.19.0. It passed to his great-grandson, the late General Sir Henry Jackson who sold it to W.S. Lewis, May 1962 with John Carter's The entry of Frederick into the castle of Otranto (see Lewis Walpole Library SH Contents C323 no. 2).
